The Bible continues to be the best-selling book in English year after year and we have literally dozens of versions readily available to us. But did you know that some Christians suffered horrible deaths to make it possible for us to have the Bible in the English language?
William Tyndale was a lover of God’s Word and wanted everyone to be able to have a copy of it. This of course infuriated the priest who said that they were the only ones who could properly understand it and interpret the Word to the common folk. In 1408 Parliament had passed the "Constitutions of Oxford" which forbade anyone translating or reading a part of the Bible in the language of the people without permission of the ecclesiastical authorities. Men and women were even burned for teaching their children the Apostles' Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Ten Commandments in English. William Tyndale, however, had an unquenchable passion to make the Bible available to every Englishman. In 1534 Tyndale was betrayed by a false friend near Brussels, arrested by imperial forces, and thrown into prison. He was accused of maintaining that faith alone justifies and for translating the Bible in the English language. He was found guilty and in 1536 was executed. The last words he spoke as he began to burn were, “God, open the eyes of the King of England.”
Today you have no one telling you that you can’t read the bible. It contains all the answers that you are looking for, God wants to speak to you today and all you have to do is open the Word and allow the Spirit to speak to you about the things of this life and the life to come. Have you been in the word today? This week?
12In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
